W.H. Webb Memorial Clock Tower Restored to its former glory…

10 August 2012

Cleary Contracting were pleased to be the main contractor involved in the restoration of the W.H. Webb Memorial Clock Tower, better known as the Neillsbrook Clock Tower, in Randalstown.

The 31 foot high tower was dedicated to the memory of William Hubert Webb after his death in 1950. The clock was dedicated to W.H Webb because of his pivotal role in the development of the Old Bleach Linen Company, as well as his involvement in expanding the social and sporting activities of Randalstown. The Old Bleach Linen Company was formed by the late C.J. Webb, father of W.H. Webb. W.H joined the business at 17 years old and throughout his years became deeply involved in the linen industry setting up the Irish Linen Guild and was chairman of the Linen Research Council at Lambeg.

The tower had deteriorated substantially since its dedication in 1952, with the clock faces being removed during this period. The local community group, Neillsbrook Community Development Group was keen to restore the tower to its former glory and successfully secured the necessary funding to carry out the restoration work. Financial support was provided by the Heritage Lottery Fund and Ulster Garden Villages Ltd., and architectural support from Kriterion, a Conservation Architectural Company.

Cleary Contracting began restoration work in 2011 and completed the work in time for the unveiling ceremony on 24th February 2012. As the photos show the tower looks exactly as it did when it was first built in 1952.
